Full Band Setlist Megathread (merged)

Has 'In a world called Catastrophe' been played on this tour at all? I remember he had that one in the list he posted on his site... I don't think I have seen it in one setlist yet... Vancouver - Thursday, one can only hope... it's one of my faves... fingers crossed.

Well the Calgary show kicked off nicely at Virgin festival with a great opening tune, Giant and then a joke about how he was happy the sky was blue, not having to be worried about being electrocuted in Alberta again. The massive crowd cheering and screaming in reply. The rest however, to a matthew good fan was a disappointment. I don't have an exact set list, but lets put it this way every radio hit was played after the opening except for black helicopters.

I know he most likely had to play all the "well known" songs due to the fact that it's a festival, and not everyone there is a fan, but I'm sure one fan-friendly song could have been thrown in... Suburbia, girl in the war, protest song... something at least.

This is where it got bad though, the crowd started acting up, fight and push circles... the usual. He stopped singing twice due to the crowd getting a little to rowdy, which is understandable, safety first right? But it seemed as if he had more time to play but decided to leave because of the disrespectful crowd. He just looked pissed off about the 4th song in. Every song after that he played, the crowd got worse and he looked more pissed off. This went on to the end of show.

I should have known better, the only way to enjoy matt is in a room full of people who respect him. Not drunken idiots waiting for the tragically hip to come on stage.... which I didn't wait around for.

Here is a sample of my recording from the June 21 (Edmonton) show, A Single Explosion.  I will be working on the remainder of the concert over the next few days and then I will torrent it at Dimeadozen and Zomb.

Thank you so much...I was afraid no one would record any of these shows. I'll download it and help seed over at Dime!

I agree with you 100%

The Virgin Festival was the 39th MG show I've been to. All of them in Alberta, and all of them different experiences from each other. Aside from the fiasco that was Wild Bills in Banff 2004, this was the worst show I've seen.

Matthew Good's Greatest Hits.

For all the respect given the band, it might as well have been Disc 1 of In a Coma playing over some horrible speakers that bleed in and out while everyone has a beer and laughs at the obnoxious jokes scrolling over the "text your message to the big screen!" banner.

Black Helicopter was the best part of the gig, hands down. But I was seriously disappointed, especially after watching the rest of the tour play out. The set list wasn't even an hour long, we got no encore, and the slowest song played was Apparitions. All I wanted was Champions. No such luck.

Giant, Hello Time Bomb, Everything is Automatic...after those three songs, I honestly felt like I had gone to the concert in the Delorean. I looked around for the flaming stuffed animals that made his show at Stampede in 2000 so ...bizarre.

I should have expected it, I suppose. But I felt the set pandered to the "festival crowd" and after spending almost $80 to get in, I felt kind of ripped off.

But I'll stop bitching now. I'll still pay to see him play again, and I'll still regret not buying Edmonton tickets when I had the chance. Oh well.

Another tour and another great recording. Thanks again Gursky for sharing this!

I would've done Mississauga, however, we all know how that show went.

Like I mentioned, somebody did tape Oshawa - I saw him standing about two or three people back from the stage on the right side (not far from where I was).

So the question remains if that surfaces or not.

Wow, people complaining that he played mostly singles at a festival show...thats fucking ridiculous, I dont see why you would've expected anything different...it wasn't going to be a straight up Matt Good show, its a festival show with many different bands...my god

Not his first Festival either, at least not that I recall...and yet, still the first one I attended where it was all singles. It wasn't the only complaint we had either. Just one of many.

But I suppose you're right. You can't expect complaints at a forum for discussion. Never mind that they (The festival organizers, artists, etc) are still selling a product. No, we can't complain as consumers who were disappointed with the experience given the money we paid. We should all be bowing down to the perfection of "just being apart" of the experience.

Okay, here is an example...he played Edgefest 2000...here is the setlist..

1. Giant

2. Rico

3. Hello Time Bomb

4. Strange Days

5. The Future Is X-Rated

6. Load Me Up

7. Apparitions

8. Everything Is Automatic

WOW, ALL SINGLES!!! I CANT BELIEVE HE DIDNT PLAY PRIME TIME DELIVERANCE OR SUBURBIA, WHAT BULLSHIT!!!1!!1

The concert wasn't filled with hardcore Matt Good fans that want to see his more obscure stuff thus why would he bother playing them. Be happy with what you got because it's not a bad setlist.

It also wasn't a *great* setlist. So why should I "be happy with what got?" I don't understand why it's inappropriate for me to express dissatisfaction with my experience.

Edgefest was 8 years ago. Prior to the introduction of Matthew Good as a solo artist and records like Avalanche, White Light, and Hospital Music. Prior to acoustic tours, re-workings of old hits and an obvious effort to distance himself from what he was back in the good ol' days of Edgefest.

The concert was okay. It wasn't great. It wasn't congruent with what I've come to expect from Matt's shows over the last 5 years (since 2003, where he re-launched as a solo artist with new directions in mind).

By the way, he played Stampede that year. It was a "festival" style show, meant to serve the masses. You'll find "Avalanche" was in the set list.

I don't know why everyone is complaining about the set at Virgin Fest. Obiously it was a set of his hits and you had to expect that due to the type of show that it was. With the direction Matt is going these days I feel lucky to see a show like this because who knows how many more chances we will get to see Matt just rock out to the old favorites. By the way, it was great to see some of the new songs with a full band. Also the crowd did suck with too many drunks and people passing out left right and centre. Maybe Virgin Fest will learn to give their patrons a few more options in food, beverage and even booze!

P.S. I hope Matt Good hung out with Dallas Green and talked about doing something together. (I can wish)

As a consumer of a festival ticket I would have been pretty pissed off if every band there that I didn't know as well as a hardcore fan might know them didn't play they're radio hits. If i wasn't a huge MG fan and didn't know his music outside of radio I would pretty much expect to hear what I knew. it really just makes sense. It is after all a festival. Each band is performing for a large range of people. People go to festivals to have a good time with some good music playing. Who likes listening to music they don't know at a festival? If you want a fuller range of an artists music you go to their concert, not a festival.

Do you have this show? I lost it in a hard drive transfer a few years back ;)

That set list is pretty much a shorter version of all the sets that he's been doing this tour.

I don't mind people talking about their dissapointment in a show. Although, I think it should be expected that when you go to a festival show you are going to pay more to see a shorter set list filled with radio singles amongst people who aren't Matt Good fans. I just don't think it's fair to critisize the show based on the set list content or length. I think its important to realize when you buy tickets to that show you are buying tickets to go to the festival and not to a Matt Good show.

Yeah, I saw that. I guess criticism isn't permitted from the fan base. I should have stayed home. Too bad, I was there. I also noted that there was more to the negative experience than the set itself. I don't feel he needed to apologize, for what it's worth. I do recognize the reasons for choosing the songs that he played. I just don't agree with them 100%

Like I said in the original post, I will still pay to see him again. God forbid anyone around here expresses anything but complete delight and awe over a Matthew Good concert experience. But I also said I've been to 39 shows. It was bound to happen eventually that one wouldn't meet my expectations. *shrug* I won't apologize for posting an opinion.

I quite like Disc 1 of In a Coma.... I'll take that set list any day...

(sorry if anyone read my previous post. I edited this.. not trying to start shit, it's just 'what other songs instead of that album could be better than this'?, that anyone has ever heard of? )... not all fans are as hardcore as the next.. he takes that into consideration..

Thanks for the clarification. You're right, In a Coma is good.

As for your question? I thought the festival would have been a good place for exposure. I'm kicking myself for posting my "non set list complaints" elsewhere, because they made my "bitch bitch, moan moan" speech more complete. I wrote on the blog comments that the alcohol consumption and high price of water made for an intolerable crowd. After sitting through that most of the afternoon, I was excited that Matt's set was starting. My other complaints were about sound quality and festival organization, nothing of which had anything to do with Matthew Good himself. As for the set?

I do not have some sense of entitlement, nor do I believe that *my* personal favorites need be played at every show. I have heard my personal favorite played 3 times, and I don't expect that will ever happen again. The set was good. It was a fun set, and it made a lot of people happy. The songs chosen were by no means bad songs. I didn't mean to make it sound as if they were. (Apparently I need to work on communication).

I had held out the hope for more variation, on the basis of exposure. Play 2 hits, maybe play one not-so hit, 3 hits, etc. Yes, I would expect that there were 16970 of the 17000 people there that weren't "hard core" fans. But there were some of us there that would have appreciated the nod, and as for the rest? Maybe it would have made some of them sleepy....or bored. But what about positivity? What about the potential "this is something I've never heard of before, and I like it, so I'll check it out." I just look at it as an opportunity to perhaps reach a larger audience with something other than what the corporation deemed worthy of the radio. I guess one could argue that the one song I'm asking for was "Black Helicopter," which was played. It could also be argued that Matt is popular enough to not need that brand of exposure, but to that I say BS.

I don't know if that answers your question.
