Calgary X929 Contest

Manage to find out the location yet?

No, I haven't. All cards point to Wild Bills, which is tragic...

Sorry to hear about caller 8, Calgary Dave. I called last Sunday when they played Rico. I didn't call until the first chorus was over, and I got through. The guy told me I was caller 1. What? Caller 1? But the song is almost half over! So, there is no rhyme or reason to the system at all.

All the advertisements I've heard for it (well, the ONE I've heard because I don't like the radio) said it was at Wild Bill's.

WHO TO BELIEVE?!?!?

I'd believe it wasn't at Wild Bills. I cannot imagine Matt ever playing there again given what happened at the last show, and after it.

The town is pretty small though. For the safety of the people involved, I'd say the Banff Centre would be the best choice, but given that it's sponsored by Molson, it'll probably be at a bar. There's a tiny bar across the street from Wild Bills that has a stage, perhaps it's there?

If I were Mr. Good, I'd play in the November streets before I'd go into Wild Bills again, but that is just me.

Matt's Show is Friday November 7th at Mt. Norquay, which if I remember is a ski resort....

*edit* They also just announced a Medicine Hat show...maybe I'll get tickets and drive there instead. At least it's gauranteed.

Where'd you find out about the new location?

I caved this morning and bought tickets to the show in Medicine Hat. My boyfriend and I discussed it and figured that we likely wouldn't fit in with the whole X92.9 "Molson Canadian Rocks" crowd anyhow. So we're going to the 'Hat since purchased tickets = gauranteed admittance. That and a concert sponsored by Molson will likely have a similiar set list to the Virgin Festival, and I didn't like that gig at all...*wince*

Hopefully there isn't an insane storm with white-outs that weekend:)

So, the contest at X92.9 is over, and after weeks of trying, giving up, and then pulling every industry string I could think of, I finally got into the show. So I am going to the show in Banff on Friday, and then driving to Medicine Hat for the following show on Saturday night.

I'm dragging the boyfriend along for the ride. I'm really looking forward to it:)

The show last night was pretty awesome. He played the ski lodge at Mount Norquay. There were about 300 people packed onto buses and driven up the mountain. It was the smallest crowd I've shared a Matt Good show with. He started playing at 11:30, and had some problems with the sound equipment and channels on his guitar. He bitched about it and thy made several attempts to fix it before he gave up and said it was "good enough, let's fuckin' rock and roll." He played until 1am.

I was pleasantly surprised to see 2-3 other people in the room singing along. I was glad there were more fans there. The majority of the crowd were drunken morons though.

Here is a setlist. I am not convinced it's in the right order, but I think all of the songs are there. If I remember anything else I'll update it later. Pictures are on the way. I'll upload them with the Medicine Hat pics I take tonight.

Giant

Hello Time Bomb

A Single Explosion

Odette

The Devil's in the Details

Black Helicopter

Load Me Up

Apparitions

Put Out Your Lights

Blue Skies Over Bad Lands

Born Losers

I'm a Window

Weapon

Champions of Nothing

Girl in the War

Drunken morons!!! Fuck that makes me SOOOOOO MAD! I'd KILL to go to something like that; in fact, I'd willingly pay a month's salary for the privilege ($4000). I assumed, as they had phoned in, that 100% of the audience were die-hard fans. Poor Matt; I hope he didn't pick up the vibes dude. Glad to hear you enjoyed it though. Pix please, asap.

I just came back from the Medicine Hat show. Matt said that when he played on the mountain in Banff last night, that the altitude made him rush off stage at the end, puke, and pass out.

He said he "played one of those radio things last night. You know, where you gotta play all the radio hits." So tonights show had an "eclectic" set. The show in Medicine Hat tonight was almost pure fan service. Once again, my setlist is probably 100% out of order, but here is what I remember:

A Single Explosion

Avalanche

Odette

99% of Us is Failure

I'm a Window

It's Been a While Since I was your Man

Blue Skies Over Bad Lands

Weapon

Born Losers

Black Helicopter

Apparitions

True Love Will Find You In the End

Giant

Hello Time Bomb

Load Me Up

Champions of Nothing

I have some pictures. When I get back to Calgary I'll put them up and post a link here. This was an absolutely fantastic weekend. I feel fortunate that I was able to experience it.

Oh poor Matt! I can't believe he managed to play an entire show if he was sick from the altitude. :/ What a professional.

In any case, it sounds like both shows were still awesome, the drunken morons at Banff aside. ;) The Hat setlist looks like it was amazing. And I can't remember him playing "It's Been a While ..." at all on this tour before.

Thanks for the recaps, I'll be looking forward to pics! Great to hear you had a nice time.

I find it strange that the altitude would affect him that much. When I went to Denver, I got off the plane and ran 12km a few hours later and had no problems the 5 days I was there and it's double the altitude of Medicine Hat.

I've heard of triathletes being out of breath at altitudes as low as Banff (and by this I mean when they're just visiting, not when they're running a marathon or anything), so I think even if you're healthy you can be affected by that kind of change in altitude. It seems to vary pretty randomly from person to person. I'm sure the smoking doesn't help either ...
