Music Process

Was all of Hospital Music done with Garageband? I remember seeing that Black Helicopter was a GB demo at one point but I'm not sure about the rest. And Matt said something a little while ago about there not being a single live string on HP so now it has made me wonder.

It would just be kind of interesting to me if it was or I guess I just don't know how it works because HP sounds real and not simulated or whatever so I'm wondering about the new album, if all the sounds used in the program will sound as realistic?

To the best of my knowledge the last time Matt used a real live symphony orchestra on an album was Avalanche. There was a blurb about it on his old discography page how he would never be able to afford to do that again.

Hospital Music and the new demoes we've been hearing our sounds created through a keyboard from a Symphony Orchestra Jam Pack for Garageband. I myself own this jam pack and can say they do sound very realistic once you play around with the settings and can really add to the song.

This post on his site will probably answer any other questions you may have http://www.matthewgood.org/2008/10/demoing...ns-and-answers/

Is your asking of whether it's a question or not sarcastic? Because I don't find anything wrong with me asking it.

Sorry, I guess I just got lost in the second paragraph. For the life of me I can't figure out what HP means (I work for a systems integration company so HP automatically means Hewlett Packard to me).

Matt explained a bit how he did it. Here's a brief summary of it:

-The strings on Avalanche were performed with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (which is something he cannot afford anymore)

-To the best of my knowledge, Matt didn't use GarageBand back in 2001/2002 (Avalanche demos).

-Hospital Music consists basically of demos with the drums re-recorded and some overdubs:

In fact, when we tracked Hospital Music we just muted the drums and Pat Steward simply played along to the demos for the most part. On a few songs that didn

Matt has also written on this forum that not all of Avalanche employed the VSO...and points out that we most likely cannot tell the difference anyway (between the orchestra real and G/Band). He is super-skilled at using GarageBand...

Now, every home studio can't possibly sound good without a Neumann U 87....oh, and some Neve strips, Pro Tools, some Avalon pre's and...maybe a good song to start with.

...just sayin'.

Did you remember to hire an acoustical engineer to work over your room first?

Honestly, I'm pretty proud of what I've been able to accomplish with Cubase SE and a couple of SM-57's. (I should probably upgrade to Cubase 4, but I'm worried I'm too damn cheap. Have you had good luck with it?)

I don't think that Hospital Music was just demos with new drum tracks.

I believe what he meant by that statement was to record the drums, they just used the demos that he had prepared, muted the already present drum tracks, Pat played along to the recording of the demo and then Matt went from there to recreate the rest of the songs in the studio with real instruments.

Don't ditch Cube 4 just get some decent pre's and a couple of condensers.

AT 2020's are cheap and sound good.

57's are instrument mics. A 58 is the same cap.Just take the ball off.

Oh yeah, duh, I caught that afterwards. What I meant was HM as in Hospital Music. Sorry for the confusion.
