Songs That Are Better Live Than On The Album.

Recommended Posts

99% of us is failure, a single explosion and black helicopter!

i always liked 99%, but i assumed it would be really boring live. i was so wrong. so much more emotion comes through, i couldn't believe how well he pulled it off!

black helicopter was the most artfully done out of all the songs in the setlist when i saw him last summer. it had the most definition and subtleties.

The live bootlegs of A Long Way Down from the Avalanche tour that I've heard have added guitar parts that sound great. Other great songs live are Avalanche, Pledge, Fantastica, Giant (this is best as an encore opener, with the crowd chanting the "kickass" part until the recording of the cheerleaders comes on), Apparitions (love the Massey Hall version), Blue Skies, Suburbia, Time Bomb (when he lets the audience sing the chorus at the end), 99%, I'm A Window...etc. I'm gonna stop there, I could go on forever lol.

I'm going to add Symbolistic White Walls with extended lyrics.

Yeah def Symbolistic w/extended lyrics, blew my mind when I heard that live the first time.

21st Century made all the Avalanche shows so fucking current and relevant, with new comments and excerpts added every night. That blew my mind even more and sent my head spinning.

I will also agree that Near Fantastica is probably the most badass live song that I've ever seen from 12 years of performances. Christian Thor Valdsen TORE THAT SHIT UP, and Matt was on his knees half the time rockin out.

Hmmm Born to Kill was a pretty heavy assault as well...

99% of Us is Failure. Somehow, the live version is sadder.

I kind of hope though, he doesn't play it at the show I am seeing, in December. I will start to cry. I cry every time I here this song because my mom has terminal cancer and it really hits home. I seriously, CANNOT get through that song without crying. ;)

Yeah I've never actually seen it live (I've only actually been to one Matt Good show, on the WLR&RR tour) but all the bootlegs and video I have of it are awesome. I have to say Pat Steward is an awesome drummer live, I think he really adds intensity and urgency to the songs but he doesn't really get to show off much on the albums.

Yea I saw him once and he opened with Near Fantastica, it was fucking amazing really. definitely Giant for an encore opener but how about for closers though? I find sometimes he can't get a really good closing track at the end. For me at least. Everything is Automatic was amazing at Massey Hall but then he came out again and finished with True Love, that was meh, another time he closed with Empty Road, great song but not a really good closing track. I think I alson remember him closing with Apparitions, Can't Get Shot in the Back. I think a more solid track would close the show better

Pledge, just because it was reworked from this mellow number to full on rock. I also rank Pledge as a song in my top 3 Matt Good tunes. From them demo, to the album version, to the reworked live version, to the acoustic arrangement, it is an absolute perfect song. And yes I have a copy of all, for those interested. I really should do a Pledge retrospective in the Lounge.
