Us Remains Impossible - 2nd Single?

Recommended Posts

Well from the sounds of it the next singles are The Vancouver National Anthem, Us Remains Impossible, and Great Whales of the Sea. Quite the collection!

I would enjoy TVNA as a single. I shudder to think how it would be cut down though. Why can't they just play 7 minute awesome songs? They used to!

In any case, I am happy with whatever he does. Any exposure is good, as all of the above are solid songs (Thought I think URI is the weakest on the album, but that's just my opinion).

I think the label wants it to be played on your standard rock stations. And most of them play 3-4 minute songs (on average). And he does need to sell albums, so he does need airtime. But I think a song like TVNA could be played without too much trouble. Even if they shaved off 30 seconds or so, it's around 6 minutes. That's long for radio, but not ridiculous. Now...Empty's Theme Park is a whole separate story. I don't think you could salvage that one for radio. Nor would I want to! It's wonderful as it is.

Try this: Kill the left audio channel during the intro. It removes the acoustic guitar entirely, so it's just matt's vocals and the lead. The song is instantly better; it removes the initial 'fruitiness' and presents the song bare-bones. So good. I'm going to garage band right now...

From a commercial standpoint, the entire "We all live downtown, we all die downtown, step over ourselves." is killer for getting into people's heads. Concept wise, yes that 4 minutes would lose a ton of flavour from the original but if they can make that one section work it can do well. Good luck though! (it always seems shittier to the people who've heard the original first obviously, but to people who have never heard it thus far it could be effective)

Which song are you talking about?

Yep, I think you got a good point. The people who haven't heard it and aren't buying the album are the main target anyways and they wouldn't know the difference yet so they could probably make it work as a 4 or so minute song for them. And then, BAM, some new people buy the record and get treated to the proper version and it's that much better. The well shortened song may not be near as good to us but who cares? We can always listen to the longer version. But yeah, they should just play the whole thing, but I doubt they would. And I agree lyric wise with the "We all live downtown, we all die downtown, step over ourselves", that could maybe really get into some people's heads.

So since the CD wrapping included the sticker that says "Includes LAST PARADE and US REMAINS IMPOSSIBLE", does that mean URI is the next single? I always figured it would be Silent Army or Fought to Fight It.

Ya, I thought it would be Silent Army for the next single too, but the more I listen to album version, it seems a bit too slow or quiet at the start to be a radio single.

Us Remains Impossible would be a decent single. It is definately improved compared to the demo version and I think the 2nd half of the song sounds great when the guitars kick in and the song ramps up.

On WLRRR, i doubt the album the 1st week it was out & the sticker on the CD said "featuring Alert Status Red & Empty Road". Obviously Empty Road wasn't even a single for that album. So while it's likely 'Us Remains Impossible' will be the 2nd single (which it should, its the best song on the album musically IMO & radio friendly), record companies obviously reserve the right to change these decisions.

Stickers don't = a binding contract to fans lol.

If the 2nd single is The Vancouver Nation Anthem i'll be disappointed. One of my least fav songs musically on the album. Lyrically i like it.

This whole album is in a unique state because of the 2010 Vancouver olympics. Sales of the album may get a little bump next year just because of the album name. A few tourists may see it in stores and airports and pick it up. Having a song called "The Vancouver National Anthem" as a single presents some marketing opportunities. This would be the case even if the Olympics weren't going on.

I think it makes sense to release Us Remains Impossible (or another song) as a second single sometime in the next couple month, then have Vancouver Nation Anthem as the third single in February to coincide with the olympics.

Haha, that would be interesting.

And many people would hear it and go "I looove Vancouver!", kind of like how so many politicians in the United States use Born in the USA, even though it's a protest song.

Except the word 'Vancouver' isn't repeated several times in the chorus and indeed isn't even in the song (or the rest of the album). I think listening to the song people will know it's social commentary a) because of the "we all live downtown.." part and b) it's Matt Good lol. I think the only way someone might think it's a "Go Vancouver!" song is just by looking at the song's title.
