Am I The Only One Up For Another Straight Rock Album?

Recommended Posts

I'm listening to WLRARR and I know this is kind of the bastard step child of his solo albums, but it's been too long for me since Matt released a straight rock album like this. Put Out Your Lights/Poor Man's Grey/We're So Heavy are such a great 3some to open an album.

It's obviously not as complex an album as his others, but I can't be the only one jonesing for another rock album from Mr. Good, can I?

Well I'm not exactly jonesing. I'm really happy with that album, it's actually my favourite on the whole. It was so refreshing after the perfected and laboured production of Avalanche, but I wouldn't want him to repeat himself for the sake of repeating himself... I think the next best thing, and I think this has been coming for awhile, is a stripped-down, acoustic folk-blues album of new material. Then again, hah, he's not getting any younger, so I could wait X number of years for that to finally happen.

I'll be honest and say I've never enjoyed this album as much as his others. However, I may not have given it a fair chance. Beyond Alert Status Red, none of the other songs are really on my playlists.

But this thread has convinced me to give it another shot. I'll put in my car and listen to it for a few days.

One of the things I like about this album is that the songs are great to play on your own with a guitar since there's not tons of layered guitar tracks.

In contrast, the same thing happened to me with Avalanche, aside from Weapon I never gave that album a fair chance. About a year or so after it came out I gave it another listen and was blown away.

'We're So Heavy' IS one of his finest accomplishments, period. Some of my favourite lyrics as well

Hey, I've lost too many years to this

I walk behind the crowd

and pick up the garbage that was our future

without memory

that made the children of the system we created, and then forgave

How can you love Jove, Drusila and Forsake Rome?

blows my mind 98% of the time to listen through that. And 'Blue Skies' is a moment of such sincere empathy... Damn fine album!

Now now, no need for the Foo Fighters hate. They make some good music. I don't like all of their stuff, but much of it is good rock. I love The Hell Song off of In Your Honor.

foo fighters were solid for the first 2 albums and they went downhill fast after that.

foo fighters now are the complete antithesis of what nirvana was, i'm sure dave is fine with that but i'm not one for arena rock

Make it sound like Foo Fighters album and I am in maybe.

Interesting, because that's what the beginning of Little Terror reminds me of. Something off TCATS, like My Hero with the drums.

Matt could make the Foo's sound good.

I agree. Now if Foo Fighters were still writing songs like they did in The Colour and the Shape days or from their first three albums at least then they wouldn't need Matt to make them good but now that is clearly somewhere they're lacking that Matt isn't - songwriting department.

Picked up mahgeetah and learned Poor Man's Grey and Been Awhile Since I Was Your Man for kicks.

Also, Ghrol is infinitely better when he's behind the kit as all the Nirvana records, Songs For The Deaf, and most likely the upcoming Them Crooked Vultures album will attest to.

Wrong and maybe right as well. The Colour and the Shape beats anything Nirvana did anyday and is easily Dave's greatest accomplishment. But he did also do most of the drumming on that album according to what I've read (I never used to know that) and I think it shows because it's definitely the standout drum album of the Foo's as well.
