2010 Us Tour

So I've been waiting to see Matt in concert for well over a decade. For whatever reason, I've never been able to make it to a show before. I have tickets to the Cleveland show, but am debating not going because it's a 500 mile drive up from Tennessee. I'll regret it if I don't go, won't I?

 

have you considered going to the show in pitt on the way back? it's 2 1/2 hours from cleveland but it's really probably only an hour or so out of your way..buffalo is only like an hour or two from cleveland(quick shot up I90 ) you could throw in a trip to niagara falls..catch the pitt show on your way back(make a few day vacation out of it) That would be 3 shows in like 4 days plus a day in niagara/buffalo you can tack a day in cleveland n pitt on the beginning and end of the trip. It's fucking madness to drive 500 miles and just see one show. (i've driven from philly to canada 3 times to see him play)

Just another show to Matt I'm sure, but the venue was perfect. Like he was playing in a basement. I was 15 feet away the whole show and nobody was behind me. When I moved up I was 5 feet away. So different from the Canadian showsI'm used to, and even LA on Saturday. Great set, lots of familiar songs, my better-than-average-fan friend Trav loved the familiarity. Less Vancouver than the LA set. Great energy despite being the bastard stepchild concert to the LA show (with agents, etc).

 

Automatic Loveletter CRUSHED IT. Srsly. Go see them. Incredible voice on Juliet. I got to meet her tonight and she is rad as hell. DO NOT MISS THEM.

 

So the guys killed it as usual, video was a LOT less of a problem here than in LA. Got 5 songs in HD plus some banter. Saw a couple others videoing as well. Will upload my SD stuff with Whales from LA asap. Probably going to be youtube. Did the cotton ball over the microphone holes trick so audio is way better than most. You guys will like it so much you will dismiss my wobbly camera work. Beers are hard sometimes.

 

Hung after the show for one more beer and met some cool people, the only other ones who didn't ghost so fast. Got to talk to Blake a lot, then went in to the can, found Blake's setlist still on the stage, Stu came out, got his sig, then Milos came from the shadows and scribbled something....bassists......lol. All these guys are GREAT people. If you get the chance, make sure you talk to them...they are fantastic musicians and help Matt's performance reach the next level.

 

Super cool assistant chick, we'll call her PEI, as that is where she is from, saw my 75% groupie effort and went on the bus to get Matt to sigh my shite. As you can see, he did. Word is, he hit the bunk pretty fast and only talked to a couple fans...bummed I didn't get to thank him for his music. Next time.

 

Great show, both Sat and tonight. I feel privileged. Thanks Matt for making the trip here. Please come back soon.

Anyone going to be at the TN show? Driving in from Florida, as that's the closest he's coming. Beats the flight to Canada I was planning last year though!

 

Actually, that and the detective work I'm doing to figure out if Avalanche has a chance of being on the Memphis setlist suggests this admiring fan thing is no longer healthy.

No. I definitely can't afford to do multiple shows. It's looking like I won't be going to the Cleveland show after all, but I am going to make it a point to catch a show on his next tour. I'd love to see an acoustic show if he ever does another one of those tours.

Phoenix show 3/16

 

I went to the venue early to see if there was anyone waiting. The doors didn't open until 7:30 and at 4:30 there were people in the parking lot. They were just waiting to see if Matt would sign some things. There was a guy who lives outside of Phoenix originally from Buffalo. We listened outside to the soundcheck. They played 4 songs. When the band came out after soundcheck I talked to Blake for a bit, then I talked to Matt. He said all the songs in the soundcheck would be in the show that night. I was excited since there were several that had not been played yet on this tour. Matt told me what songs they planned on playing and I was even more excited. He said it would be the most eclectic setlist so far. They did eventually delete Vancouver National Anthem from the show but had planned on playing it. It sounded awesome at soundcheck.

 

We arrived at the venue around 6pm and were first in line. Before doors opened there were about 40 people waiting to get in. Matt had said earlier that presales for the show was about 160 tickets. I was impressed. First of all people don't usually go to shows in Phoenix much less on a weeknight. When they started letting in the place was packed. The crowd was so into the show. Matt seemed to have a good time despite sweating to death on stage.

 

After the show we waited around and talked to him and the band for a bit. I told Matt that the show was perfect and it couldn't possibly get any better than this show. He made a joke like, "Great the tour can only go downhill from here." The whole night was beyond amazing. If anyone travelled to a different west coast show, this would have been the one you would have wanted to come to. It was that good. All in all I'm guessing we had close to 200 people show up. A few drove in from other States. Met some cool Matt Good diehards, none from the bored. Was good to see that there are more Matt fans here than I thought.

Really nice setlist. I've always thought that Single Explosion would be a good opener. The Weapon->X-rated->Load Me Up->Apparitions combo must have been awesome to. I've always wanted to see him do Alert Status Red as well, but have missed it at both shows I've been to. Sounds like it was definitely a good show, wish I was there.

Hello everyone. I just joined the forum but have been a Matthew Good fan for about a decade now. When I heard Matthew Good was finally touring the United States with a full band, I instantly grabbed tickets and have been psyched ever since. I'm a concert enthusiast and have seen practically all of my favorite bands from AC/DC to Nine Inch Nails to the Pumpkins to Pearl Jam. When I go to a show the headliner usually plays for about 2 hours, sometimes even 3+ (Pearl Jam). I must admit...I will be making quite a road trip for this show and after seeing several of the setlists, I am a bit disappointed. Some of the setlists only have 11-14 songs. Now I researched his Canadian tour dates and they were approximately the same length.

 

How long does his concert usually last? I'm doing the math and seeing that an 11-song setlist will probably be about 50 minutes to a hour. That seems a bit short for waiting 10 years.

Quality over quantity.

 

I've got tickets for the NYC and Boston shows. Will be my 9th & 10th time seeing him, 3rd time in NYC. First time was back in 01 with MGB, I was 16 and it was a 21+ show. I only got in because my parents were with me, hah. They didn't much care for Matt lighting stuffed animals on fire. My dad liked the cheerleaders though.

 

Anyway, very excited! Bowery Ballroom is a great venue.

Actually, Matt's 11-song setlist runs longer than an 11-song setlist would for the bands that you listed. He's got a number of 6-7 minute songs in the list. It should run about an hour and twenty minutes.

 

But keep in mind - the four bands you listed are the exception, not the rule. All four of those bands are huge. All of them have been around for 20+ years, all of them play major venues (arenas, amphitheaters). For them, you're paying $60-$100 a ticket (at least). That's why they play 2+ hour shows. (Actually, I'm not sure if the Pumpkins are still on that level - it's hard to tell these days - but Corgan's never been known for his brevity.)

 

It's not really a fair comparison. Most bands don't play that long, especially in clubs this size. And, despite the drive, you're paying less than $30 a ticket. (Matt's Canadian sets do run a bit longer - typically an hour forty-five to two hours - but those shows are in bigger venues and run $40-$50 a ticket.)

 

The story would be different if Matt were a known performer in the States. But, at the moment, he's not, so he's playing venues and sets that match the level of where he is. And what's he's playing is pretty typical for headliners at this level.

I've seen other relatively unknown artists play for around 2 hours already. I don't know if anyone on this board is familiar with Mark Kozelek (Sun Kil Moon/Red House Painters). I've seen him several times and he usually plays for about two hours...given it isn't usually a high energy show. If anyone is a Neil Young fan (or a fan of singer/songwriter who is a great guitar player) I would highly recommend you check his music out. Does anyone know of him???

 

I am still looking forward to the show. I just hope it has the high energy as I anticipated...like I said...I've waited 10 years for this.

 

Does Matt and the band usually do meet-and-greet after the shows for autographs and whatnot? I would really like to let him know how much his music has meant to me over the years.

Sadly, I know Mark Kozelek best as the bass player of Stillwater (from Almost Famous). "Let's just go out and find some barbeque or something..." ;)

 

I'd say Matt's show is kind of medium-high intensity. Some of it depends on the setlist - in the last couple of years, I've seen intense and I've seen medium-mellow. He doesn't really jump up and around, and his back's been fucked up lately. But his voice sounds amazing live, and his current band is tight and awesome, so even if he's feeling like shit, there's still some good intensity. As long as you're not expecting the spazzy Matt of 1999, you should enjoy it.

 

This is more-or-less what the show might look like (shot in Charlotte in December):

 

Historically, during his Canadian shows, Matt has met folks out at his bus. He didn't do that during the last Canadian tour because he's got a crappy immune system and didn't want to risk getting sick and having to miss shows. If you read through this thread, it sounds like he's been hanging out here and there, so you might be able to catch him. (Probably depends heavily on the venue.) I doubt there will be "official" meet-and-greets, though.

the 3 shows i've been to in canada were about 1:40..he's playing a bit less here and for a bit less money..

 

Have you decided if you're going to pitt or philly? I guess philly's a bit closer. I haven't been to the world cafe live yet, but the tickets are more expensive and there are other events going on at the "complex" or whatever xpn calls their venue. Parking probably is gonna be hell as well, and i'm not much of a fan of the neighborhood regardless of how many ivy league schools are in the area! I know Mr smalls in Pittsburgh is/will be a great place to see him and i'm sure you will be able to say hello before or after the show..parking/hanging out in pitt will also be much cheaper and easier. I don't know if that helps you at all but..here's to trying!

I'll be at the World Cafe Live in Philadelphia, PA (about 3 hours if I go the back way and avoid all of the traffic). Pittsburgh is too far of a drive for me (4 hours with no traffic...last time I sat in traffic for 2 hours getting downtown). I was between NYC and Philly and even contemplated going to both, but I think I will have to settle for just one...tough economic times. Anyway, I'm still excited even if the setlist is shorter than I anticipated.

Matt has said quite a few times that he isn't making a dime off this tour. He's also said that he has no aspirations of gaining popularity in the US, 15 years into his career. He's doing this tour completely for his US fans. So your really lucky that you get to see any kind of Matt Good show in your area.
