THE MAN

Thanks To...bob Rock(?)

Recommended Posts

Bob Rock is thanked in the liner notes and I find it somewhat of a surprise. I am mighty curious to know what for, not to mention how they are associated.

Made me wonder though...imagine Bob Rock producing a Matthew Good album...Hahaha jeez it would epic. He recorded Age of Electric for cheap, he should really just record the next solo album for nothing. We can call it his official pennance for letting Lars run wild on the disgraceful STAINger...(St. Anger)

I seem to recall Matt wanting to get Bob Rock to produce Underdogs, but he was busy with another band so he got Livesey instead. I could totally be wrong though.

That sounds vaguely familiar. I remember seeing him in an interview with Rockburn on the TV channel cpac (around the time that Audio of Being came out). I think he talked about that at one point during the interview.

Bob Rock ruined Our Lady Peace, in my opinion (and they've never recovered). Rock is a fan of power chords and simple melodies, and taking away any unique sound in favour of making a bland rock album. Most hardcore fans of various bands (Metallica, Our Lady Peace, etc) don't like him for what he did for those bands. Technically he might know what he is doing, and he knows how to make music that sells records, but at the expense of artistic expression, I think.

However, that's only a fan's perspective. I know OLP really don't like him for what he did for them, but maybe other bands/artists like him as a person.

No way, can't blame Bob Rock they should blame themselves for not keeping Mike Turner around. I would say Jeremy Taggart is the only thing that kept the songs enjoyable all these years. Although I will admit the very first song "All For You" off the Bob Rock produced Gravity album is something I enjoy. Go figure it's the last song Mike Turner wrote with the band, haha.

Absolutely Mike was a positive influence. He realized that the atmosphere of songs matters just as much as the actual melodies. One thing Bob Rock did was tell Raine to lose the falsetto, and because he stopped practising it he's never been able to get it back to where it used to be. That was one thing that made them kind of unique, and then for 2 or 3 albums in a row he basically was monotone. Such a dumb decision.

They are still one of the best acts around to see live, however.
