You're about to 1999

Recommended Posts

Honestly I don't even care which songs will be performed as they were originally and which will be the revisited versions... figure it's gonna be brilliant either way.

Started listening to MG/B when I was around 16 and at the time certainly couldn't afford to go to Canada for any shows and couldn't attend the less-common shows in the USA as they were generally in 21+ venues... seems like they'd have been mostly 19+ in Canada anyways. In more recent years I've seen MG twice in Portland (once with a band when Vancouver came out, and also a solo acoustic show for the Lights of Endangered Species tour). So to see a show focused on Beautiful Midnight at time when I can easily make it has me more stoked than I'd been for show in a long time.

The only song that I'd really love to hear the original of is Suburbia. I did hear Load Me Up live at a show in 2010. I guess the original Born to Kill would be awesome too. But the others were sung by Matt at a different time in his life. He has changed as a vocalist. So the updated versions will probably be easier for him to pull off on stage during a long tour. Totally fine with me.

hahahahahaha

Whoops, that's embarrassing.

Nah, not embarrassing. Gomo was only making reference to the original post:

Matt's website has been updated. Are we about to hear the 20 year, revised, anniversery album for Beautiful Midnight?

not an insinuation that we would have to wait another 2-3 years to get the finished product.

I am assuming a lot about 3 district posts with this statement, but that is how I interpreted it.

Lol, I appreciate the attempt at a save. I know there was no negative attitude in Gomo's comment, I'm just personally embarrassed I didn't catch that as, having been listening to Matt/MGB since 2000, I'm very much aware of the year the album came out, but for some reason just assumed 20 years without doing the math in my head.

It's all good :)

It is a little strange, it would seem to make the most sense (for posterity) to release something like this in a "milestone" year after release (i.e. 10, 20, 25, etc).... but I am crazy impatient, so 17 years seems like a perfect milestone year to me.

Interesting article. This particularly piques my curiosity regarding the new effort which I assume means the new studio LP but I'm not certain:

"It has a very original new wave bent to it," Good says. "And when I say that I'm talking about actual new wave – bands like Television, the Police… that kind of thing. Not mid-late '80s synth new wave."

'Very original new wave bent'.  I wonder what that could sound like.

Just heard the full version of Suburbia on Google Play Music. It's very good. I have a soft spot for the original version given it's always been one of my favourite songs from Matt but the new version is completely different. I like the new guitar pattern too!

Is there anywhere to purchase Suburbia in the U.S.?  I don't even see digital pre-orders for the EP available anywhere (iTunes, Google Play, Amazon).  Makes me curious if it will be even released tomorrow in the U.S.?

Maybe I'm missing something... any help would be appreciated.

Suburbia is so entirely different, wow just a totally different spin on that one.  I prefer the original because it was just so harrowing, this new version is more up beat, and while still enjoyable lost some of what made the original fantastic.

Really enjoyed the new Born to Kill.  It sounds like it could translate very effectively as an acoustic only song as well.  Captures a fantastic mood on this.  It has a more conventional ending than the original.

Let's Get It On was the one I was least looking forward to after the brief preview, but is probably my second favourite after a single run through.  It still captures the original feel of the song while being at the same time fresh and different.

I think this version of Load Me Up would resonate more if an acoustic slowed down version didn't already exist.  It would be more shocking and effective that way.  I still enjoyed this, and find it funny that I keep trying to sing immediately into the high register for the "I'm frantic" bit, only to discover Matt keeps it in the basement haha.

I Miss New Wave is probably the most like the original and didn't have any parts that really stood out as being a major departure.

As with all of Matt's albums I'm looking forward to subsequent listens as often my opinion changes the more I hear.

I think it's funny how the digital copy of the album is tagged as "I Still Miss New Wave: Beautiful Midnight Revisted" when you play it in a media player.

It's impossible to listen to these reexaminations without any emotional attachment to the originals. Judging them on their own merit is difficult, but I think I like Let's Get It On the best. The original version is one of my favorite songs in the MG oeuvre. He took the new one in a completely different direction, so I can enjoy the new vocal delivery without mourning the original plaintive style. Born to Kill is cool too. The latter has a more atmospheric feel to it than the hard intense original. I also really like the slow acoustic-driven take on Load Me Up. I know a lot of us are fortunate to have seen Matt live on multiple occasions. Hearing the original at every show, and as a radio mainstay sort of burned it out for me. I like having a new take on it, for sure.

About halfway through Born To Kill so far. I'm missing that original guitar riff, but it's still really great. This is a great example of what you'd hear live at a Matt Good show. Stu is such a great player. You can always recognize his style. That twang.

Born to kill just ended. A little underwhelming for me personally, as the original is just so extravagant.

I'm still in absolute heaven though. Thanks so much Matt, for revisiting this record and being so thorough with it. Let's Get It On is kicking my ass.

Is that a for sure. My Amazon pre order says it ships tomorrow

Matt's webstore says it ships in January, so I'm not sure. It also has a blue vinyl as well now.

Just gave it my first listen and I really liked it. You're not going to revisit my favourite album of all time and necessarily improve it in my eyes, but I'm very happy with what was produced. I'm interested to see if the remaining songs on the full album get these same sort of treatment. The article linked to on the previous page leads me to believe they will be. I'm curious how that's going to be received by fans of Beautiful Midnight that aren't like us. How will Mr. and Mrs. casual fan feel about it?

The article is worth a read and he touches on something that I don't believe many think too hard about: the current iteration of the band has been together longer than MGB was. It seems obvious that they'd take a different direction with older material.

So, I have listened to all of the songs now... I have to say that the whole EP is fantastic, from beginning to end. Matt sounds great!

Beautiful Midnight is my favourite album of all time, so I am not going to compare. These are all refreshing takes on the material that I am glad we are able to experience. The recording is so lush and meant for head-phone listening ... I was never a huge fan of the original "Let's Get It On' (mind you, "never a huge fan for Matt Good is still a 9.5/10) . I'd even say this version is an improvement.

Regardless of my attachment to the originals, if we get these versions live, I would be one happy camper!
