ELKTON, Maryland (AP) -- A melee erupted among a crowd of shoppers in the rush for the new Xbox 360 video game console at a Wal-Mart Supercenter in northeast Maryland.

It took 10 police officers to restore order.

A crowd of about 300 people waited as much as 12 hours for the game, considered a must-have item this holiday season, to go on sale at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday. But an announcement from a store manager that the Xboxes would be sold on a first-come, first-served basis, instead of using a number system devised by customers, triggered the mayhem.

"That's when all hell broke loose," said Ben DiSabatino IV, a 23-year-old Bear, Delaware, resident, who had been waiting in line since 4 p.m.

Some customers were knocked down and trampled, though there were no serious injuries, said Elkton Police Lt. Lawrence Waldridge.

Wal-Mart canceled the sale and police ordered everyone to leave.

This is probably why Microsoft is deliberately short-changing stores. Build the media hype. If they only ship 10 to one store, they can say the store sold-out in 2 minutes.

I entered into my college's student association's poker game last night for $5 and 89 other students entered. The grand prize was an Xbox 360, and I won my first table and went to the final table. I ended up in 2nd place and won a $200 poker chip set which isn't that bad but if I had won that Xbox it would be on ebay so fast...

first, the price ain't dropping anytime soon.

Microsoft PURPOSELY CUT SUPPLY to stores.  We had the most Xbox 360's in our region and we still couldn't fulfil our pre-orders.

we had 50 somthing pre-orders and were only able to hand out about 30 something.

its all about supply and demand.  more the demand the more the price can stay up. its ain't dropping anytime soon. we were even told that.

games will and might.  controllers and that crap as well.

Perfect Dark only good game.  Come on now.

Need For Speed.  You seen the graphics on Madden. Call of Duty.  come on. check those out.

1. True, but the price will likely drop in a year from now, when the PS3 is expected to make its North American debut (holidays 2006)

2. Thats a rumour. You can't definately say Microsoft cut supply purposely, or if they just couldn't make their orders in time. Nobody really knows FOR SURE what the reason is for the short supply, and you won't find any conclusive evidence anywhere on the web (i haven't seen any). The only people that know what happened is Microsoft, unfortunately.

My friend pre-ordered a 360 from EB Games, and they couldn't fullfil his order and he still doesn't have his yet. Lots of that happening everywhere as i'm sure you know.

3. I agree, Perfect Dark isn't the only good game. Project Gotham Racing 3, Kameo, Call of Duty 2, King Kong, Ridge Racer etc. have all gotten good reviews.

- And people looking not as impressed with the 360 graphics need to also remember that the developers who made the games that are out now didn't have access to real Xbox 360's (since the 360 hardware wasn't finalized yet) until late in the design process. Virtually all 360 games out now were mostly designed and developed on PowerMac G5 computers, which had only 80% of the power the current 360 consoles have.

- p.s. I'm an Xbox guy myself (though i own a PS2). The PS2 was pretty good but IMO the Xbox was better in every capacity, ie: Better graphics, better online, better controller, the harddrive, & most all multi-console games look/play better on Xbox. PS2 trumps Xbox in 2 areas: 1) PS2 controller has a much better rumble feature, and 2) PS2 has more games.

I didn't buy a 360 since i'm waiting until the 2nd generation of 360 consoles to come so M$ can work out the bugs...which are inevitable for consoles when they are 1st released. I'm also eager to see what the PS3 can do, but preference all really comes down to hwta kind of games you like and what you're used to.

Matrix, video games is not only about looking cool and playing Halo. It's about having fun. Nintendo has low prices, good hardware, amazing software. I'm 20. I dont judge you for you video games choices so please do the same.

i also support nintendo! (playstation is my preference though)

nintendos prices are so low, and you are getting a quality product, ive been through 2 psones and 2 ps2s, yet my original nintendo from the 80s still runs strong

it's pretty common knowledge that the nintendo didn't even run well in the 80's... sure, mine still "works", but not very well.

wow, man. you really take your nintendo seriously.

in my opinion (and please note that i said IMO, so don't bite my head off) the only drawback to psp is the lack of good games--but the ds is lacking in that department as well. in fact, most of nintendo's games are lacking lately. the only good thing they have left is the zelda franchise... and RE4 was pretty awesome.

the dual-screen thingy seems like a gimmick and if i found a game that utilized that option to its full extent without being awkward, i'd be all for it.

as it stands, warioware and all this other 'twirl your little pen around' garbage is really silly... i owned a ds for a while and i am basing my opinion on experience.
