That's like saying I'll mail you a copy of the new Red Hot Chili Peppers CD that comes out next month if you donate $15 to the Ronald McDonald House.

Ok, not actually the same thing. If the demos were available for sale in stores, then yes, but since they aren't, I don't see anything wrong with what this guy is doing.

I could be mistaken, but I believe Matt said he didn't care if people shared the demos so long as nobody profited from it. (Ex: the guy who made and sold the original History Teacher, which is when Matt stepped in.)

 

This guy's certainly not profiting from it, and is apparently paying for the copies and shipping out of his own pocket, so I don't see a problem here.

that's exactly how i see it. there's 2 cd-r's which he pays for and they come in a cd pocket, mailed in a simple makeshit envelope of paper (seeing as cd's don't fit in normal envelopes). it's actually coming out of his pocket, but i feel better knowing i donated to a good cause instead of $30 per tape on ebay. i was tempted to do that until i found this guy's website. even if it is illegal, i don't really care haha.

I was under the impression that Matt had pretty much disowned the early demos, no?

 

I don't know. I'd be all up ons to snag hold of a copy, if sold at a respectable price. I enjoyed a fair few of them, but not enough to drop a good chunk of paycheck on it.

I feel like most of MGs early demos are either hit or miss, unfortunately most miss.

 

But there are some good ones that I would love to hear him revisit/reinvent - too bad that'll NEVER happen.

 

My top 3 are:

1. The Ocean - just kind of flows

2. South of Summer - cool use of strings and MG's voice sounds unrefined but still powerful.

3. Mercy misses you - cool instrumental (strings and piano)
