when i saw him in 04 he opened with '21 Century Living' and instead of his rants like on the album he used like CNN clips about bush and the war for the verses and it was one of the coolest things i've seen him do live

Listening back to some shows from the 2003 Avalanche tour I have to say that "Pledge of Allegiance" should be on that list. It is a slow building song that fit everything perfectly. I forgot how great it was of an opener until I took a trip down memory lane.

Although, with that said, I voted for "Put Out Your Lights" because the 'flip a coin' opening on the Revue tour was very high energy and was all about the rock.

i said avalanche, because it was a knock out opener on this tour.

21st Century has always felt like a prime mid-set list song. Giant is a killer opener, but i honestly like it better as an encore opener, with everyone chanting "K-I-C-K-A-S-S" to get Matt back on stage.

I voted for Giant, because it's amazing either as an opener or an encore opener. 21st and Avalanche are great choices too. But why Rat?

Yeah, he wouldn't want to "bore" the crowd at the start.

Which reminds me, the second last time I was at Call The Office, Matt opened with Blue Skies Over Badlands and I remember the crowd just talking to each other the entire time as most of them were bored out of their minds.

I liked Pledge of Allegiance best I think. Maybe it's a bias since that's what he opened with at the first MG show I ever saw. The piano in the live version is sick. I also think Near Fantastica should be on the list. 21st Century Living is a good one too, especially when he's making fun of bush.

Oh, and I forgot to add.... Rat's one of my favourite songs. I never really liked it until I heard it on one of the Hamilton boot's I downloaded last summer. It quickly grew into one of my favourites. Everytime I see MG I wish he'd play it live. I don't think it'd make a great opener though.

That was the Drink, actually. I remember that, although from where I was standing, people weren't that chatty.

Exxxxactly.

As for main openers, I think it's best to start fast paced, so I voted Put Out Your Lights. Though at the Toronto show I went too a while ago, he opened with solo acoustic Apparitions and it brought down the house.
