World Cup '06 Pool.

Recommended Posts

do you know your shit?

i entered a world cup pool today.

i dont know anything about soccer so, lend me your expertise, if you will. just give me the winner listed beside each number or a T for tie. it looks like you basically have to guess the winner of each match, then each pool, then match them against each other and keep guessing til you get to a winner. it looks like it could take some time, so if you feel up to it, it would be a huge help. the only reason why i did this was because the pool wouldnt work if i didnt join.

thanks guys.

I cannot offer you predictions of individual games just yet, but...

-Sweden is a very strong middle power. They came within inches of ousting Holland last year. They have the power to hold their own against the top teams and can pull off an upset if the wind is in the right direction

-The Czech Republic has a very strong team as well, but are very much underrated. They beat Germany last year, missing a few key players, and also beat Holland.

-Serbia-Montenegro had the best defence of their entire qualifying pool. There is a reason that the Argentina-Holland-Serbia group is being hailed as the Group of Death. I am legitimately concerned about Holland's chances coming through that stage.

-France has no right to be one of the top ranked teams. After winning in '98 and '00 (which came after about 20 years of not being in the World Cup) they have absolutely flopped in the two following World and Euro cups.

-Germany is the most boring team you will ever watch. Despite going to the finals in the last world cup, and despite being hailed as a "world power", they lack any spark. At the Euro Cup 2 years ago, they barely squeaked out a victory against Latvia despite having over 60% possession. They could easily be taken out by a team with players that have real talent and imagination.

-Holland has been plagued by SERIOUS ego issues in the past, especially Ruud van Nistelrooy, who has replaced Patrick Kluivert. They are probably one of the most talented teams in the tournament, but the superstar players really haven't been able to get over themselves. Also, coach Dick Advocaat made a right hash of Euro '04. Maybe they've learned some lessons, maybe not.

-Italy, like Holland, has a lot of ego problems (except, being Italian, they're not nearly as laid back). They have had a lot of problems in the not sucking department over the last few years.

-Spain. "Eh" is all I can say. I was impressed by their round robin performance in '04, but they failed to bring it to the elimination round.

-South Korea and Japan. South Korea made their Cinderella run last year under very "lucky" opportunities, if you catch my drift, although I recall Japan playing a decent game of football. In fact, Japan held themselves very respectably to a 2-1 loss against Argentina, one of the top ranked teams in this tourney. Don't count them out from too much.

-the USA. They made it to the quarter finals last time around, so don't count them out from too much. However, they're in a very tough group with Italy and the Czech Republic. Italy is going to have to pull itself together to get past those dirty Yankees.

EDIT: Read all "last year"s as meaning last world or euro cup.

I wouldn't say czech republic are underrated Adam, they're actually one of the favourites.

I agree with what your saying about the italians adam, but i think this year holland might actually pull something out.

I think you have too much confidence in Germany's chances, Jason. While it's true that the host nation tends to do well on home turf, this is Germany's weakest side in 20 years. I'd be really surprised if they make it to the semi-finals, let alone making an appearance in the final. Time will tell, should be a good one!

i was looking at the odds today and behind Brazil, England has the second best odds to win the world cup.

Now they're guaranteed into the finals.

It shouldn't be called the World Cup because it gives the false supposition that they are actually the best teams in the world, instead of the best teams in each "qualifying zone".

I'm just bitter because Scotland didn't qualify. since Ireland qualify either, I'm rooting for Australia. good choice so far.

I find it fascinating how so many millions of fans can have pride in their respective nations when I see players taking these blatant dives. I'd be so embarrassed and ashamed to be from Italy, or Brazil etc. the diving nations. in EVERY game I've seen so far, there has been atleast one of these, and you know what I'm talking about; a player throws his hands in the air as he's falling, then when he hits the ground he grabs his leg and or covers his face and winces. When he notices that the ref isn't buying it, he just gets up and walks away. This completely baffels me.

I'm looking for that one famous dive from the last cup, I think it was Ronaldinho. he was waiting to do a corner kick and someone either threw or kicked the ball to him. it him him in his stomache or whatever, so he threw his arms in the air and fell to the ground. I'd love to see that again. what a laugh
