shakedown 1979, cool kids never have the time

on a live wire right up off the street

you and i should meet

junebug skipping like a stone

with the headlights pointed at the dawn

we were sure we'd never see an end to it all

and i don't even care to shake these zipper blues

and we don't know

just where our bones will rest

to dust i guess

forgotten and absorbed into the earth below

double cross the vacant and the bored

they're not sure just what we have in the store

morphine city slippin dues down to see

that we don't even care as restless as we are

we feel the pull in the land of a thousand guilts

and poured cement, lamented and assured

to the lights and towns below

faster than the speed of sound

faster than we thought we'd go, beneath the sound of hope

justine never knew the rules,

hung down with the freaks and the ghouls

no apologies ever need be made, i know you better than you fake it

to see that we don't care to shake these zipper blues

and we don't know just where our bones will rest

to dust i guess

forgotten and absorbed into the earth below

the street heats the urgency of sound

as you can see there's no one around

Great Big Sea

"End Of The World"

It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine

That's great, it starts with an earthquake, birds,

snakes, an aeroplanes, Lenny Bruce is not afraid.

Eye of a hurricane, listen to yourself churn - world

serves its own needs, dummy serve your own needs. Feed

it off an aux speak, grunt, no, strength, Ladder

start to clatter with fear fight down height. Wire

in a fire, representing seven games, a government

for hire and a combat site. Left of west and coming in

a hurry with the furies breathing down your neck. Team

by team reporters baffled, trumped, tethered cropped.

Look at that low playing! Fine, then. Uh oh,

overflow, population, common food, but it'll do. Save

yourself, serve yourself. World serves its own needs,

listen to your heart bleed dummy with the rapture and

the revered and the right, right. You vitriolic,

patriotic, slam, fight, bright light, feeling pretty

psyched.

[Chorus:]

It's the end of the world as we know it.

It's the end of the world as we know it.

It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine.>br>

Six o'clock - TV hour. Don't get caught in foreign

towers. Slash and burn, return, listen to yourself

churn. Locking in, uniforming, book burning, blood

letting. Every motive escalate. Automotive incinerate.

Light a votive, light a candle. Step down, step down.

Watch your heel crush, crushed, uh-oh, this means no

fear cavalier. Renegade steer clear! A tournament,

tournament, a tournament of lies. Offer me solutions,

offer me alternatives and I decline.

[Chorus 2x]

The other night I dreamt of knives, continental

drift divide. Mountains sit in a line, Leonard

Bernstein. Leonid Brezhnev, Lenny Bruce and Lester

Bangs. Birthday party, cheesecake, jelly bean, boom! You

symbiotic, patriotic, slam book neck, right? Right.

ya thats why i picked that one. ok here actually is my favorite GBS song of all time. check it out.

"Donkey Riding"

[Chorus:]

Way hey and away we go

Donkey riding, donkey riding

Way hey and away we go

Ridin' on a donkey.

Was you ever in Quebec

Launchin' timber on the deck?

Where ya break yer bleedin' neck

Ridin' on a donkey!

[Chorus]

Was you ever 'round Cape Horn

Where the weather's never warm?

Wished to God you'd never been born

Ridin' on a donkey.

[Chorus]

Was you ever in Miramichi

Where ye tie up to a tree,

An' the girls sit on yer knee?

Ridin' on a donkey

[Chorus]

Was you ever in Fortune Bay

See the girls all shout, "Hooray!"?

"Here comes dad with ten weeks pay

Riding on a donkey."

[Chorus]

Was you ever in London-town

See the King he does come down?

See the King in his golden crown

Riding on a donkey

[Chorus]

I love lyrics that The Shins write.

"The Past and Pending"

As someone sets light to the first fire of autumn

We settle down to cut ourselves apart.

Cough and twitch from the news on your face

And some foreign candle burning in your eyes

Held to the past too aware of the pending

Chill as the dawn breaks and finds us up for sale.

Enter the fog another low road descending

Away from the cold lust, you house and summertime.

Blind to the last cursed affair pistols and countless eyes

A trail of white blood betrays the reckless route your craft is running

Feed till the sun turns into wood dousing an ancient torch

Loiter the whole day through and lose yourself in lines dissecting love.

Your name on my cast and my notes on your stay

Offer me little but doting on a crime.

We've turned every stone and for all our inventions

In matters of love loss, we've no recourse at all.

Blind to the last cursed affair pistols and countless eyes

A trail of white blood betrays the reckless route your craft is running

Feed till the sun turns into wood dousing an ancient torch

Loiter the whole day through and lose yourself in lines dissecting love.

Donkey Riding is also not originally by Great Big Sea (but I can't, for the life of me, recall who it was originally by; I just know that a teacher from my old high school recorded a version of it in the seventies or so).

While I'm happy to see the Mays love from Ryan44, and also the Roberts quote, it's all about Joel Plaskett, for me, lately:

from 'Absentminded Melody'

Someone whispers in my ear,

"It's not like it was, before."

I don't know what happened here,

I guess we just got bored.

The good old says, well I suppose

I'm glad they're behind us, now.

The only thing worse than growing up

Is never quite learning how.

Man's the most eccentric live performer I've yet seen in Halifax, so far, as well. Hell of a show.

Of course, Mays allegedly has two new albums in the pipe ...

"sit down, stand up

sit down, stand up

walk into the jaws of hell (sit down, stand up)

walk into the jaws of hell (sit down, stand up)

anytime (sit down)

anytime (stand up)

sit down, stand up

sit down, stand up

we can wipe you out anytime (sit down, stand up)

we can wipe you out (sit down, stand up)

anytime (sit down)

anytime

stand up (the rain drops the rain drops)

sit down (the rain drops the rain drops)

oh

the raindrops, the raindrops, the raindrops, the raindrops..."

I love the part that says "Walk into the jaws of hell", the general buildup, and aggressive speed in the climax.

Even though critics usually hate the band Bush, I think they have some of the best lyrics. Here's one of my favorite songs:

Cold Contagious by Bush

Wherever you are you will carry always

Truth of the scars and darkness of your faith

Slowly move on, how did we get to here?

It all went wrong, gravity claiming all your tears

Everything looks so much better now, looks so much better now

You will get yours

You will get yours

You will get yours

You have no right to ask me now

You were never that around

And I have missed

Reality daytrips and your suit me, suit me ways

Turn out the light switch, we've been awake for days

And no one's coming round here no more, no one's coming round here

You will get yours

You will get yours

You will get yours

You will get yours

You have no right to calm me down

You were never that around

And I have missed, I have missed

Chorus:

Cold contagious

All the mighty mighty men

What you save is

what you lose out in the end

Cold contagious

Cold contagious

Paint your perfect day

I don't mind this

I'm better off by the way

I'm deeply grounded

(You will get yours)

Repeat Chorus

Cold contagious...

Yeah, Shiri, Bush has some amazing lyrics.

I'm a big fan of 40 Miles From the Sun.

There is nowhere left to hide

there is nothing to be done

No people to be saved

No pets we never named

40 Miles from the Sun...

As darkness craves the mind

We come undone without our pride

no time on Earth to come

All the pleasure's just begun

40 miles from the sun

In our coats beneath the layers

Wash my skin of all the hate

We should sleep late

Everything just kind of grates

40 miles from the sun

I need to lose to make it right

I'll confront the stars tonight

I will babble, I will bite

You'll never know how much you shined...

In most cases. There's a few 'weird' parts that actually make no sense. Like:

Forceps, kitchen tools (wtf?)

Deconstruct, your every move

He has quite a few of those 'couplet' style verses that make little sense

Oh man! How could I forget! Insect Kin has some of my favourite lyrics ever too.

Iron lung, I know you well

I deal with you like a bad spell

See the trail, mind burns

Red stripe and Vicadin

You were the only opne! you were the centre

You'll never people me; I'm not defenseless

In the afternoon, as the light dims

Build a life out of all of this SEMTEX

You're the brightest one, you're the centre

Perfect opposite of all that you ask for!

It's not just one way

A negative factor

With all of these wasps out, I better take cover.

I won't post the rest, but it's very similar cool stuff.

Yeah, he has verses that make no sense sometimes but it's rather fun trying to guess what the hell went through his head when he wrote them. I wish he'd come back to writing like that and not like on Institute.

Goo Goo Dolls - Name

Such a sad, beautiful song... I wish I had someone who'd hide beside me, and that so many moments hadn't passed me by.

"And even though the moment passed me by

I still can't turn away

Cause all the dreams you never thought you'd lose

Got tossed along the way

And letters that you never meant to send

Get lost or thrown away

And now we're grown up orphans

That never knew their names

We don't belong to no one

That's a shame

But if you could hide beside me

Maybe for a while

And I won't tell no one your name

And I won't tell em your name

Scars are souvenirs you never lose

The past is never far

Did you lose yourself somewhere out there

Did you get to be a star

And don't it make you sad to know that life

Is more than who we are

You grew up way too fast

And now there's nothing to believe

And reruns all become our history

A tired song keeps playing on a tired radio

And I won't tell no one your name

And I won't tell em your name

I think about you all the time

But I don't need the same

It's lonely where you are come back down

And I won't tell em your name"
